Industry analyst and well-known iPhone leaker Ross Young said that Apple will stop using LTPO display technology in several upcoming models within the next two years.
You may know LTPO (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide), more colloquially known as ProMotion, which first appeared in iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro.
All you need to know about ProMotion is that it supports a refresh rate of 120Hz for smooth scrolling, and can dynamically lower the refresh rate to 10Hz to save battery life. The function has entered iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro, both of which extend the refresh range to 1Hz. You’ll notice that the base models of these two lines don’t support ProMotion.we hope things will follow iPhone 15; while looking at Young’s latest tweets (opens in a new tab)this may not be the case.
The post says that the rumored iPhone 15 and subsequent iPhone 16 will continue to feature an LTPS (low temperature polycrystalline oxide) display, the same type of OLED screen that appeared on the iPhone 14. Screen quality will essentially stagnate on the base model until 2025, when the base model and the rumored iPhone 17 will feature ProMotion, allowing it to catch up to five-year-old hardware. Plus, every standard iPhone after that will feature the same technology.
display redesign
Screen aside, Young’s tweet did reveal some very interesting tidbits.long awaited Face ID below the panel Will launch on the rumored iPhone 17 Pro, with a tiny pin-sized hole for the selfie camera. More recently, Ross Young said the development of Under Panel Face ID has hit a snag due to some sensor issues, and it won’t launch until 2025. Beyond that, the rumored 2027 iPhone 19 Pro could have an “under-panel camera,” meaning there won’t be a visible selfie lens.
According to Young, the iPhone 15 could also be the first standard model to ditch the camera notch, opting for Dynamic Island’s pill-shaped design instead. The base iPhone 19 will feature the same under-panel Face ID technology and tiny lenses through 2027 as mentioned earlier.
room for improvement
Note that this is all leaked information and should be taken with a grain of salt. Things can always change at the last minute. It is possible that the iPhone 15 will get ProMotion.
However, assuming Young is correct (which he probably is, given his track record), this is disappointing news. The standard iPhone 14 certainly has a nice screen with decent power behind it, but there is room for improvement. It’s not very good at running video games. As our senior mobile editor Alex Walker-Todd puts it, the iPhone 14’s display is “so slow; it’s all about relaying user input and [tracking] Move a threat or target across the screen.” That’s a different story with the Pro model, but you’ll have to spend nearly $1,000 on the phone.
