Experts at Samsung are currently working on a software assistant called Bixby that can clone the user’s voice when answering a call.

Artificial intelligence is making waves in the tech world, and this is just another big step in that direction. However, voice cloning certainly raises some concerns when it comes to privacy and consent.

What is voice cloning?

Voice cloning is the creation of an artificial simulation of a human voice using artificial intelligence technology. When the concept first emerged, a person would need to make a lot of recorded speech to clone their voice.

Samsung’s Bixby upgrade allows English speakers to answer calls by typing in messages. There’s also a feature called Bixby Custom Voice Creator, which lets you record different sentences for Bixby to analyze and create an AI-generated replica of your voice and pitch.

What are the advantages of voice cloning?

There are many advantages to a cloned voice. First, voice cloning could help people who have lost the ability to speak due to disease or injury. Voice cloning can also be used to create personalized digital assistants, chatbots and other virtual entities. Additionally, it can personalize the customer experience by creating a unique and recognizable voice for the brand.

There’s also the cost-saving aspect of voice cloning. It can significantly reduce the cost of creating voiceovers for video and other media. Instead of hiring professional voice actors, companies can use voice cloning to create synthetic voices that sound like human voices.

Finally, voice cloning can save time by automating certain tasks that would normally require human intervention, for example a customer service chatbot can be programmed to respond to common queries with a cloned voice.

What are the disadvantages of voice cloning?

First, it can be considered a serious invasion of privacy. People can use voice cloning to steal someone’s identity. Since you only need to record a few minutes of speech, crooks can easily steal someone’s voice and use it in whatever way they want. And because the concept is so new, there’s nothing stopping them.

It was quickly determined that the video was fake, however, it still racked up thousands of views on social media.

Another downside is that it has the potential to replace human voice-over artists and customer service representatives, resulting in job losses in those industries.
