Some Google Pixel users on Reddit have reported increased battery drain and overheating after the June Pixel feature update. Others also noticed poor signal quality and the inability to select text. Google has not officially acknowledged any such bugs, nor have we independently verified the issues on our own Pixel phones.
Google’s latest Pixels features include several useful new features, including movie wallpapers, an emoji studio, a macro focus mode for videos, and enhanced AI charging management, among others.
The update may also include hidden features, such as increased battery drain, overheating and signal loss issues, according to one of the people. Post on the r/Googlepixel Reddit subreddit. For this, some pixel 6 and pixel 7 Users agreed and attributed the decline in Google’s mobile experience to the feature drop in June.
“At my workplace (all steel building) I always have at least some signal, albeit poor. Now, if I have any service, it’s a coin toss. Thankfully, in-room WiFi is great, but Just thought it was funny how it changed after the update,” said one complaining Pixel user.
Google also experienced a similar overheating issue in May, which was caused by a server-side update of Google apps. The company managed to fix the issue in short order, but the signal, modem, and thermal issues appear to be specific to Tensor processors.
Let’s hope this isn’t a recurring issue
In all fairness, we haven’t personally noticed an increase in our personal Pixel battery drain. However, there seems to be more and more complaints about the Google Pixel. The company encountered many problems in the process of moving to Tensor, its own SOC platform. This processor is known for heat and battery issues, which we experienced with our product Pixel 6a review and Pixel 7a review.
In the meantime, it’s worth noting that the Pixels are still among the best Android phones out there. They have elegant designs and powerful cameras, and their software is still pretty good, on par with iOS in simplicity and design, if not better.
However, if Google’s thermal, signal, and software issues persist for another year or two, the company may find it difficult to rank among the best smartphones, especially when Apple and Samsung deliver great experiences year after year.
