How to Listen to DeSantis vs. Elon Musk’s Presidential Statement on Twitter
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced in a conversation with Elon Musk that he will run for president on Wednesday at 6 p.m. On Twitter Spaces, a live audio streaming platform on Twitter where people can chat online in real time.
Times reporters will provide analysis throughout the announcement, which you can tune in on its Twitter account starting at 6 p.m. Mr Musk who owns Twitter, share details about his scheduled interview with Mr. DeSantis on Wednesday afternoon.
Twitter launched Spaces in May 2021, becoming one of the first social media platforms to create a dedicated audio streaming feature. The idea is simple: provide a way for people to talk and listen in a room focused on a specific topic.
Spaces is Twitter’s answer to Clubhouse, a live-streaming social app that exploded amid the pandemic after launching in March 2020 and showcased the power of an audio platform. While Twitter used to have a live video service called Periscope, the widespread use of other video streaming tools led the company to shut it down in 2021 and focus on its audio offerings.
Any Twitter user can join a Space where the moderator can set up an audio chat room and choose topics to discuss. Moderators host their own Spaces and can pick people to speak or call on the audience for questions or comments. Some Spaces have tens of thousands of listeners, but most only attract dozens of listeners.
Twitter has never released data on the popularity of Spaces. Musk, who bought Twitter for $44 billion last year, has been a user and fan of the feature. He appears frequently on Spaces to talk about his various businesses and to be interviewed by journalists, including two recently from the BBC and CNBC.
Twitter is still working on the Spaces issue. The feature can be buggy, sometimes kicking users out or crashing. It stopped working in December after tens of thousands of users joined an audio chat room to hear Mr. Musk discuss why Twitter blocked several journalists from accessing the social network.
