4. Take photos before departure
You’ll always need to carry proof of ID when traveling, but it’s also wise to have a digital backup. Worst case scenario, you lose your wallet. Getting home will go much smoother if you have photos of all your important documents.
The easiest way to do this on the iPhone is to use the handy document scanner built into the native Notes application.
- Open the note and click compose icon in the lower right corner of the screen.
- Above the keyboard, click the + sign After that camera icon.
- From there, you can select a photo you’ve already taken, take a new photo, or scan a document.
On your Android device, take some photos and mark them as favorites in your picture library, or scan them using the Google Drive app.
Pro tip: Save your identification documents as PDF files so you can send them to another device or two, such as an iPad or Kindle. Pre-download them to access them offline and send copies to your travel partners.

5. No more paper boarding passes
If you haven’t already, you’ll thank me. Stop fumbling for the PCB pass and access the digital version.
You can log into the airline’s website and have them email your boarding pass or download your airline’s app to access it. From there, you can add it to your phone’s digital wallet.
- If you get your boarding pass by email, Apple Mail can automatically add it to your Wallet.Otherwise, open the email attachment and click the Add to Apple Wallet > Add to.
- On Android devices, use the Google Wallet app. Follow the instructions here.
