If Samsung sticks to its usual timetable, we could be launching the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro successors sometime in August — and the new smartwatches could come with plenty of extra features, too.
according to Sam Mobile (opens in a new tab), the Galaxy Watch 6 model will be equipped with a new processor Exynos W980. That’s apparently about 10 percent faster than the Exynos W920 chip in the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 4 wearables.
According to SamMobile’s sources, the processor will likely use a 5nm architecture — specifically to produce more power in a smaller space while consuming less power. In other words, expect faster watches to have longer battery life.
New name, more improvements
When it comes to Samsung rumors, you can usually rely on SamMobile — and if you add the fact that the Galaxy Watch 5 uses the same processor as the Galaxy Watch 4, it’s a department that’s likely to get an upgrade this year.
We’ve previously heard that this year’s wearable will be called the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic and the Galaxy Watch 6, and one of the devices — presumably the Classic device — will bring back the rotating bezel on the Galaxy smartwatch.
According to SamMobile, the new watch will have thinner display bezels and a larger battery than its predecessor. These new smartwatches should launch alongside the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.
Analysis: A major upgrade is underway
The arrival of the pretty good-looking Google Pixel Watch seems to prompt Samsung to make a bigger effort with its own Wear OS smartwatches — and if these rumors are correct, the Galaxy Watch 6 series will be quite an upgrade.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 starts at £269/$279.99/AU$499, while the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro costs $449.99/£429/AU$799.99, so it will be interesting to see where the two new smartwatches stand their prices.
One feature that’s been rumored to not make it to the Galaxy Watch 6 is a built-in projector — though we wouldn’t rule out that feature coming to some devices at some point. Expect more leaks and rumors between now and August.
