The Denver FBI has issued a warning to smartphone users to avoid public charging stations if possible. That’s because cybercriminals have been using a method called juice jacking to hijack public chargers and infect the devices with malware, giving hackers access to your phone, tablet or computer.
Here’s what we know.
What is a Juicer?
Juice jacking is a way of harming devices like smartphones and tablets that use the same cable for charging and data transfer, usually a USB cable. Hackers infect charging stations that are open to the public so that whenever someone plugs their phone into the charging station via a USB cable, the hacker can infect your device while the USB cable is plugged into it and steal all of your device’s data.
What if I have to charge my phone in public?
You should try to avoid using these public charging stations. However, sometimes we need to charge our devices and can’t wait until we’re in a private place to do so. That’s why you can and should be prepared ahead of time in case you need to charge your device. Here are some ways to avoid those public charging stations.
Using portable batteries
Equip your smartphone with a portable battery charger so you don’t have to plug your phone into the wall in public places while still effectively chasing your smartphone when needed. Get my pick of the best portable chargers here.
bring your own charging cable
It’s best to use your own charging cable and plug your phone into a regular outlet so you can avoid using a USB outlet. Remember to keep your charger with you, and try to find the nearest outlet if you need to charge your phone fast.
