We haven’t heard much about the Samsung Galaxy S24 so far, but a new leak suggests a major display upgrade next year: the Ultra model will apparently feature a display with a 144Hz refresh rate.
this comes from sam lover (opens in a new tab) (pass Sam Mobile (opens in a new tab)), which is not a source we’ve heard many hints from in the past, so adjust your expected levels accordingly. That probably won’t happen, but it’s also a meaningful upgrade for Samsung and its top-of-the-line phones.
All three Samsung Galaxy S23 phones currently have screens with a 120Hz refresh rate, so this would be a significant step forward in numbers — though it won’t be noticeable when you’re using the devices.
let’s talk specs
The refresh rate of your smartphone display affects how quickly it refreshes quite simply: the higher the number, the smoother all your animations, videos, page scrolling, and games will look. This is the spec that separates high-end phones from budget ones.
We’ve also got some other predicted specs from the same source, some of which we’ve heard before: the Galaxy S24 phones will apparently be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which matches previous rumors.
The S24 Ultra will apparently stick with the same 200MP main camera sensor as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, albeit adding “some improvements”, while satellite connectivity (as on the iPhone 14) is also rumored to be on the cards.
Analysis: What will happen to Ultra?
The Ultra models of Samsung’s Galaxy S phones have always been the most expensive and feature-packed – especially since the Note series ended and Samsung handed over the stylus to the Galaxy S Ultra smartphones.
Take the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which launched in February, for example. It has a larger screen than the other two phones, can be equipped with more RAM and more internal storage space, and has an excellent rear camera setup.
We’ll have to wait and see how the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Ultra performs, but it sounds like this 144Hz refresh rate will be exclusive to the most expensive phone in the series. It will most likely also be the largest phone in the series again.
This strategy of offering high-end, high-priced phones is certainly one Apple is following: in fact, it might actually be doubling down on its bet if we’re to believe rumors of an iPhone 15 Ultra coming later this year.
