What caused the urgent update?
The reason for this urgent update is that Microsoft discovered a major bug hidden in the Snipping Tool functionality on Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices. The issue, known as the Acropalypse vulnerability or CVE-2023-28303, means that the image editor does not properly remove cropped image data when overwriting the original file.

For example, say you have a photo that you want to upload to a public platform like Facebook, but your kids are in the background and you want to cut out their faces. You may wish to completely remove the cropped data from the newly saved image.
However, the Acropalypse vulnerability allows the Windows Snipping Tool and Google Pixel Markup Tool to keep the cropped data in the original file, which means that if hackers want to get their hands on the data, they can gain access to it. The number of images affected by this bug may be as high as 4,000 or more.

What is Microsoft doing to fix this?
Microsoft has released emergency security updates for the Windows 10 Snip & Sketch and Windows 11 Snipping Tool programs, which should fix this major problem. After installing the update, Windows 11 Snip Tool is version 11.2302.20.0 and Windows 10 Snip & Sketch is version 10.2008.3001.0. The company continues to monitor this vulnerability closely; however, it believes the threat is low at this time.

For now, the company recommends that all Windows 10 and Windows 11 users update their devices immediately so they can install the latest version of Snipping Tool.

- Open microsoft store
- click library
- click get updates. This will automatically install the update
Always remember to check your device regularly for more updates.

- click set up
- choose Updates and Security
- click windows update
- click download and install

- go start
- click set up
- choose windows update
- click Check for updates
- choose Download and install now
Are there any other steps I should take to protect myself?
One thing you can do now is delete any images you have previously cropped and posted publicly, and refrain from posting any other images you have cropped before this new update.
