Although, a new AI-powered pet ID app might aim to make us forget about chips and use our phone’s camera to recognize our pet’s face. This technology eliminates the need for microchips and provides a more convenient way to track our pets.
The app allows pet owners to register their pets and store their facial features in a database. Then, if a pet goes missing, the app can be used to scan photos of the found pet to see if they match the characteristics of a registered pet. What is this new Petnow ID app?
The app, called Petnow, is the first biometric app to use a dog’s nose print and a cat’s face to uniquely identify them. How does Petno work?
According to Petnow’s iOS App Store page, after downloading the app, all you have to do is point your camera at your pet’s face and let the AI scan it. Once the scan is complete, your pet will be registered and a profile created and linked to your contact information.

Your Dog Has a Unique “Nose Print”
Every dog has a “nose pattern”, and every cat has a “face core”, which is essentially equivalent to a human fingerprint, and every pet is unique. Pet IDs aren’t removable like collars or tags, and don’t require as invasive a procedure as a veterinarian’s chip. Plus, the app is completely free to use, and the idea behind Petnow suggests this could be an alternative to expensive pet insurance, which “…traditionally has been expensive and has limited coverage due to the challenges of proper identification Dogs and cats.”
Once you have your pet’s profile, you can use the Petnow app to report if your pet is missing. If someone finds your pet, the app can help you find your pet by alerting you and letting the app know.

Does my veterinarian have access to the information Petnow collects?
It’s unclear whether veterinarians will be able to access the information Petnow provides because the app is so new and not many people have used it yet. However, you can always let your veterinarian know you have the app and show them what it looks like and what information it holds at your next visit. It may be helpful to use the app with your veterinarian to gather the most accurate data for your pet.
