What is the new charging feature?

In the iOS 16.1 update, Apple introduced a new feature called “Clean Energy Charging.” According to Apple, this is a way for iPhone users to reduce their carbon footprint and ultimately benefit the environment.

Enabling clean energy charging means that when you charge your iPhone, it gets a forecast of the carbon emissions in your local grid and uses that forecast to charge your iPhone during clean energy production.

Clean Energy Charging doesn’t turn on every time you charge your phone. Instead, it usually only kicks in when you’re charging your phone in the places you go most often, like home or work. It will also start in these locations if you charge your phone for an extended period of time.

It won’t start if you’re charging your phone in a new location, such as while on vacation, or if your charging habits are often different. You’ll always get a notification when it’s active, and if you don’t want to use it, you can long press the notification to turn off the feature. More on that later.

Why are people upset about this new feature?

The main reason people are upset about this feature is that they claim that it causes their iPhones to charge much slower than before the feature was implemented.

People also complain that after updating their iPhones, the setting is turned on by default because they don’t want Apple deciding how they’re going to spend their energy for them. However, if you don’t want to use this feature, there is a way to turn it off.
