technology

For years, I’ve been answering technology and digital lifestyle questions on my national radio show and podcast. At this point, I’ve heard it all.

I also noticed trends. Everyone wants to know about app privacy sometimes. Use these steps to stop companies and people from tracking your every move.

More and more I hear about people being stalked online — or suspect they are. Here’s how to tell if you’re paranoid or being watched.

For those who have been stalked or digitally harassed, it is a terrifying experience that needs to be taken very seriously. Here’s my guide to protecting yourself online.

Join 400,000+ people getting messages I trust in their inboxes every day.

A note on stalkers and digital spies

One of my listeners, Rhonda from Boston, called because a hacker had been tormenting her for seven years. They disabled her home security system, broke into her car, and changed her password. Jill, who is from Phoenix, said she has been dealing with similar invasive issues for two years.

A family issue ended in an arrest after a stalker tricked a caller’s college-age daughter into coming to my show. Find out how my team and I helped her here– scary stuff.

In my experience, these stalkers are almost always victims or someone who was close to the victim.

If something weird happens — your password is cracked, someone logs into your account, you find an AirTag in your car or in your bag — think about who is behind it in your life.

I don’t say this to scare or make you question your friends and loved ones. Instead, it usually takes a long time to figure out who is behind these intrusions, and you need to think logically from the start.

Privacy Wisdom: How to catch anyone spying on your text messages

Start with your router

I like to start here because a lot of people forget how much information they have if they know your router’s login information. In theory, they could see what you do online and what device connected.

This is especially dangerous. For example, it could allow a stalker to see if you are home and using the internet from your phone.

If you’re concerned that someone is accessing your device or learning too much about your life, buy a new router.be sure reset default password as soon as possible.

Have you been divorced recently? It takes a lot of work to untangle your digital life from your spouse. Start Here My Guide to Breaking Up in the Digital Age.

Whether the person harassing you is your ex or not, they’ve probably already gained access to your account, and that’s a huge problem. Start with your most important logins — like your email, cloud storage, and banking — and change your passwords.

Do not repeat passwords or use any easily guessable passwords. Consider using a password manager to keep track of them.

Use stronger two-factor authentication

Add an extra layer of security to your account by enabling two-factor authentication. Yes, you can do it via text message, but it’s not the safest way. I recommend using an authenticator app. These applications generate one-time login codes. You will need a username, password and code to access your account. Here’s a primer on how they work.

looking for malware

Check your monthly data usage, look for unexplained charges on your bill, and see pop-ups as red flags. Scan your device with antivirus software for any malware or spyware that may be installed. My choice is TotalAV. For a limited time, five devices are only $19 per year.

When something happens to your phone, a full factory reset is the easiest way to start over. Scroll to step 2 for steps to do this for iPhone or Android. Be sure to back up your photos, videos and messages first.

update your software

Make sure all your devices are running the latest versions of operating systems and software. This patches a security hole that hackers could exploit.

Consult a Cyber Security Expert

When I hear of a confirmed case of cyberstalking, I highly recommend contacting a cybersecurity professional. You should contact your local authorities, but someone who specializes in digital forensics may have the time and resources that your local police department does not.
