Pirated copies of the popular video editing software have been altered to include malicious instructions that take over an infected Mac or MacBook, forcing it to act as a cryptocurrency miner for hackers.

To make matters worse, this latest malware masquerading as legitimate Final Cut Pro can bypass and shut down some security processes running on infected devices.

What is cryptojacking?

Cryptojacking – or crypto-mining malware attack – is when hackers successfully place malware on a target computer undetected in order to use its resources to manipulate cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

Cryptomining malware is often difficult to eradicate and can compromise computers, laptops, smartphones, tablets, and connected devices. Strong antivirus protection can often eventually detect these hidden cryptojacking attacks when unusual network traffic and running processes are spotted.

Once infected, the victim’s device often exhibits very slow speeds while being actively cryptojacked.

Investigative investigation by security experts Jamf Threat Lab Leading to the traceability of a malicious copy of Final Cut Pro to a known bad actor with a history of uploading and spreading viruses.

Since 2019, the same hacker has been responsible for planting multiple dangerous malware attacks hidden in pirated copies of Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro X.

Only download legitimate software. The safest places to download software are the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Downloading software online from other sources carries a much higher risk of introducing malware into your world.

Update operating software. Make sure your computers, smartphones and tablets are always running the latest version of operating software.
