Most of the time suspended in the air, without a net, the 34-year-old wore head-to-toe bright red on stage in Phoenix, revealing a baby bump, becoming the first pregnant woman to star in a halftime show .

She looked cool and effortless in a custom red suit by luxury labels Loewe and Alaïa as she strutted across platforms 15 to 60 feet above the venue.

However, aside from looking flawless and cool, there’s a way to go crazy that ends up being very beneficial to players.

Why does Rihanna spend so much time on air?

Many Super Bowl performers, like Lady Gaga and P!nk, give their all to their performances, and Rihanna is no exception.

When she and her creative team were told they could make her perform safely in the air while being supported by trusses big enough to support a freight train, they jumped at the idea.

The idea itself came from Bruce Rogers, the creative director and production designer of the Super Bowl for the past 16 years. Rogers cites a variety of reasons.

For starters, most of the show takes place in the air, which means the crew doesn’t have to have a big stage at the venue. This helped ensure that the turf on the field was not damaged so that the Chiefs and Eagles players could continue playing safely in the second half.

It also made it easier for the crew when they had to quickly load everything up offsite, as they only had about 7.5 minutes to get everything set up and 6 minutes to do everything.

How are the stages and platforms built?

Several factors had to be considered when building the stage and LED-lit platform on which Rihanna, her 80 dancers and seven band members would perform.

In order to minimize the weight of the stage on the field, it must consist of no more than 15 rolling structures. Due to the size and shape of the tunnel within State Farm Stadium, it also had to have stairs that could slope upwards for transportation.

Each structure varies in shape and size, from the smaller 10 by 24 feet and weighing approximately 2,000 pounds to the larger 8 by 31 feet and approximately 4,000 pounds. They each have turf tires that allow them to roll gently over the field without ruining the grass.

In terms of the platforms themselves, each platform measures approximately 10 x 17.5 feet. During the first half of the game, all seven floating stages must be stored in trusses above the field.

Then at halftime they each had to be guided to their performance positions (all within 7 minutes) on synth cable. After the performance, they are guided back into the truss until the end of the game.

Is this the new way to perform the halftime show?

Rihanna’s show was sure to be the first of many halftime shows to be played in this way. Not only is it a super entertaining visual for the home crowd and spectators, but it also minimizes the impact on the field, which is a major concern of the NFL. Let’s see how this show gets bigger and better in 2024.
