Twitter has been blocked on multiple networks across Turkey, according to NetBlocks, a group that tracks internet outages – cutting off a key communication channel for coordinating relief efforts after Monday’s devastating earthquake.
NetBlocks director Alp Toker said the coordinated nature of the block suggested it was likely the result of a government order. He said network data suggested the blocking was done by software installed by telecommunications providers that prevented specific websites and services from loading.
Turkey has a history of imposing social media restrictions during emergencies and major security incidents.
In October, Turkey’s parliament passed sweeping legislation aimed at combating disinformation. As part of the measures, social media companies must remove content and provide proprietary information to authorities if requested. Companies that do not comply may experience slowdowns in Turkey.
