KEF's new Dolby Atmos speakers include an 'acoustic black hole' for better sound quality

KEF has updated its range of high-performance R-Series loudspeakers with a new set for 2023. The series boasts audio technology upgrades for superior stereo or home theater sound, whether you want to put a new set of speakers on a bookshelf or stand on the floor.

KEF is known for making quality audio products that deliver high-end sound, such as the KEF LS50 Wireless II Stereo Speakers. According to KEF, the seven loudspeakers in the R-Series “are designed to deliver superior performance, more detail, greater insight and greater excitement.”

This is thanks to a series of technological upgrades, including an improved tweeter gap damper to dampen resonances for improved detail, a flexible decoupling chassis to prevent unwanted vibrations and deliver better quality, and a hybrid aluminum bass driver for Greater driver excursion, resulting in deep and controlled bass.

But the standout feature here is a new technology, which KEF calls metamaterial absorption, a “maze-like structure” in each speaker with channels that absorb specific frequencies.

According to KEF, this creates an “acoustic black hole” that absorbs 99% of unwanted sound coming from the rear of the speaker’s tweeter. The result is less distortion, which guarantees a pure acoustic performance with an incredibly natural sound.

There are seven speakers to choose from to suit every preference. The R11 Meta, R7 Meta and R5 Meta are floorstanding speakers, while the R3 Meta is built for bookcase or stand placement. They all provide high-fidelity stereo sound and are designed to work in a variety of spaces. KEF says the strength of these speakers is depth and detail. The R6 Meta and R2 Meta are center speakers for home theater setups, delivering clear dialogue and suitable for use in a variety of rooms.

All speakers in the range feature the modern and sleek design we’ve come to expect from KEF. Available in three finishes, Black Gloss, White Gloss and Walnut. But two signature finish options will also be available later this year: a Titanium Gloss Special Edition for the R7 Meta and an Indigo Gloss Special Edition for the R3 Meta.

The KEF R-Series is available now, but you’ll have to wait until summer 2023 to see the special edition.
