You might have thought that every aspect of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 phones had been leaked at this point, but that’s not the case — the rumor mill keeps pouring out more information about these flagship devices ahead of the February 1st launch.
Today we got another piece of information from a well-known leaker ice universe (opens in a new tab) (pass GSM Arena (opens in a new tab)), who gave us some details about the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s portrait video mode on Chinese social media platform Weibo.
The source says the mode will be able to shoot at 4K resolution at 30 frames per second, and that the phone offers relatively good thermal control, so the processing power required to capture clips in this mode won’t overheat the phone.
Raised resolution
The portrait video mode on the Galaxy S22 Ultra didn’t impress us, especially compared to the movie mode on the iPhone. In both cases, the subject of the video remains sharp while the background becomes blurred.
The current Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra can shoot regular 8K video at 24 frames per second, or 4K video at 60 frames per second. In portrait mode, the resolution drops to 1080p at 30 frames per second.
It’s unclear whether the other two Galaxy S23 models will feature portrait mode this time around. All will be revealed when Samsung’s next Unpacked launch event kicks off, and that’s only a few weeks away.
Analysis: A Tale of Two Sensors
Based on the rumors we’ve heard so far, we expect the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra to feature a new 200MP ISOCELL HP2 sensor that Samsung announced. Meanwhile, the standard and Plus models are rumored to stick with the 50MP primary sensor.
That should mean the Ultra model is the one with the most significant camera upgrades compared to last year’s model. So far, we’ve heard night vision will be better, and we’ve seen samples for comparison purposes.
There are also rumors that Samsung is adding more modes on the software side to match the hardware improvements. From a photo and video standpoint, you should be able to do a lot more with the upcoming Galaxy S23 phones.
In fact, there’s been so much chatter around this that we think the Galaxy S23 Ultra could be one of the best camera phones of the year — it might even be more than anything Apple has designed with a camera on the iPhone 15. .
