Porsche has teamed up with seat manufacturer RECARO in an unexpected collaboration to produce a gaming chair based on the former sports car.
With a rather unsexy nickname, RECARO x Porsche Gaming Chair Limited Edition (opens in a new tab)the chair leans more toward comfort than racing-inspired fashion—and that’s probably a good thing.
Gaming chairs are notoriously lacking in ergonomics, as manufacturers often prefer flashy looks to comfort. After hours of gaming or working, you’re sure to start feeling some pain in your lower back. Addressing this directly, the Porsche Gaming Chair features “anti-dive seat ramps,” meaning the seat cushions are at an upward angle, as well as “firm lumbar support.” All of this sits atop a lightweight aluminum base, so gamers can sit comfortably in the chair without worrying about it slipping.
Porsche adds that the chair is made from “high-quality upholstery foam and breathable fabric” to provide year-round comfortable seating; a definitely welcome feature for those hot summer days. The last notable feature is the 5D armrest, which can be adjusted in a number of ways for the perfect fit. All put together, you can game in an upright position without having to deal with back pain. It’s always good practice to get up and stretch your legs after hours of sitting (based on experience here).
availability
True to its name, the Porsche Gaming Chair Limited Edition will indeed be limited to only 911 units. This seemingly random number could very well refer to the latest version of the Porsche 911 GT3 R. It’s available for pre-order now for a whopping $2,499. Its ship date is set for March 15th.
If a Porsche gaming chair sounds familiar, that’s because it’s almost as Exo Platinum Sky by RECARO (opens in a new tab). According to the product page, both chairs are made from the same breathable fabric, have the same 5D armrests, the same aluminum base, and have a weight capacity of up to 150kg (330lbs). The only real difference seems to be the exterior design: the Porsche Gaming Chair matches the exterior of the 911 GT3 R, and even has the car’s logo embroidered on the headrests.
It appears that Porsche’s chair is the more expensive American version of the Exo Platinum Sky. That chair costs 1,249 euros (about $1,350).
We reached out to Porsche to clarify if this is a U.S. exclusive or a global shipment. This story will be updated if we hear back.
