Charlie Cox seems to have revealed that Daredevil: Rebirth won’t be fully R-rated when it launches on Disney Plus.
Speaking exclusively to TechRadar to promote his new Netflix show Treason, Cox admitted that Marvel’s Phase 5 production won’t be as bloody or mature as the character’s Netflix series.
This is sure to be disappointing news for Marvel fans, who had hoped Daredevil’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Disney Plus show would be as violent and grim as his three seasons on Netflix. However, Cox also said that Born Again won’t be a completely family-friendly product. Instead, The Man Without Fear’s standalone MCU series will sit somewhere between TV-14 (12A in the UK) and R-rated (18-year-old rating).
Asked if he could confirm if Daredevil: Born Again would be strictly R-rated, Cox said, “I don’t know. My gut tells me it’s going to be somewhere between what we’ve done before and what’s currently on Disney Plus.” Between the content. . In terms of tone, I think it’s going to stay sinister and dark and painful — you know, for a more mature audience. But it’s probably not going to be as scary.”
Given that Marvel Studios wants its movies and TV shows to reach as many viewers as possible, it makes sense for Daredevil: Rebirth to shy away from a TV-MA rating. However, as Marvel begins making superhero movies and shows with a mature slant, such as Werewolf by Night, Marvel Zombies, and Deadpool 3, it begs the question: Why couldn’t Born Again be fully R-rated?
Industry insiders include Daniel RPK (opens in a new tab) with Grace Randolph (opens in a new tab) (Thanks to Reddit for the discovery) claims Born Again will Rated R, but not yet confirmed to be 100% TV-MA. We’ll wait for confirmation from Marvel before jumping to any conclusions.
It shouldn’t be too long before we find out, though. With Daredevil: Rebirth slated for release sometime in 2024, principal photography had to start early. Thankfully, Cox was on set to confirm when filming will begin on Daredevil’s next small-screen adventure.
“I haven’t read any scripts,” Cox replied when TechRadar asked him how much he knew about the show. “But I know we start filming next year. Early next year, to be more precise.”
according to Jacob Fisher discussing the film (opens in a new tab)Rebirth is rumored to be in full production in February, which is in line with what Cox told TechRadar. Numerous cast members have been announced in recent weeks, including Michael Gandolfini (All Saints of Newark), Margarita Levieva (“The Tie”) and Sandrine Holt (“U.S. Gigolo”), it seems that Marvel is preparing to start production.
For now, we officially know that Cox and Netflix Marvel TV show alumni Vincent D’Onofrio are returning as Daredevil/Matt Murdoch and Kingpin/Wilson Fisk, respectively. Additionally, Born Again will consist of 18 episodes, with principal photography set to take place in New York, rather than Marvel’s usual Atlanta location.
