If you’re planning to visit family or friends in another city or state this year, make sure you’re prepared for the chaos that may ensue. Here are CyberGuy’s top 5 tips for traveling this holiday season.

1. Set up personal hotspot anytime, anywhere

The world has become more remote working friendly, but sometimes you need to browse the web in more remote locations too.

If you’re traveling away from the internet and want to keep in touch with family and friends, setting up hotspots in various places where a wireless signal is available is the way to go when free, secure WiFi isn’t in sight.

You can set up a hotspot through your mobile phone carrier or turn your phone itself into a hotspot. Either way, make sure you never get disconnected again.

If your mobile wireless carrier offers a Personal Hotspot option, follow the steps below to get WiFi using your iPhone or iPad (as long as it has cellular service).

iPhone and iPad (WiFi + Cellular):

  • go set up
  • tap cell phone
  • tap Personal Hotspot
  • On some iOS devices, you’ll see Personal Hotspot directly under Settings
  • If you don’t see a Personal Hotspot option, you can contact your cell phone company to add it to your plan.

You can then choose allow others to join, and the WiFi password will be displayed. Next, turn on the WiFi settings on the other device you want to connect to the internet. From the list of WiFi options, select the iPhone or iPad you’ve set up a hotspot on, and enter the passcode that’s displayed.

3. Exchange currency directly on your smartphone

International travel is now easier without the stress of having to mentally convert different currencies when you arrive at your destination. You might want to check the price of something before buying it abroad, but you’re not sure how much it will cost you in US dollars. Instead of looking up exchange rates and calculating them yourself, get all currency conversions on the spot using your phone’s camera or a simple app.

If you’ve updated your iPhone to iOS 16 or later, Live Text in Camera can read what your camera sees. This means that if you turn on your iPhone camera and point it at any text or number, it can read it in real time. Use this feature for currency conversion by opening your camera app and pointing it at a price tag. Once the camera sees the number, tap the live text key that looks like this:

Then at the bottom left you’ll see a box pop up with a number – click on it and you’ll see a transition there.

Android Currency Converter

If you’re traveling with an Android device and want to stay up-to-date with currency conversions, download Google application.it is available Free on Google Play Store And there are a lot of tricks that normal browsers don’t have.

Just open the Google app, type “convert [insert the price of what you’re converting here] to USD”, the number will automatically pop up based on the current global market.

4. Be prepared to rebook your flight if it is delayed or canceled

Have you ever wondered how someone always seems to be able to rebook a canceled or delayed flight more easily than you? The next time something breaks down, these travel tools can come to your rescue quickly.

Canceled flight? If your flight is cancelled, using the ITA matrix flight search shows other airlines that may be better flight recovery options. To save money, airlines would rather put you on a later flight on the same company plane. Whether you’re logging into WiFi at an airport, a hotel, or somewhere else while you’re away from home, your privacy and information are at high risk if you’re not using a VPN.
