Electric scooter brand Atomi has launched a new flagship model, the Alpha, and it’s taking safety more seriously than most. Surprisingly, this leads to some features that many other electric scooters don’t have, such as street turn signals.
There are other scooters like Mavericks KQi3 Pro, using LED headlights, brake lights, and reflectors for safety (all of which the Alpha also has), but most of the time, the company stops there. However, Atomi decided Add more basics (opens in a new tab). In addition to turn signals, Alpha is also equipped with A range of customizable mood lights (opens in a new tab) Under deck and on stem for easy night riding. You control these through the Atomi app, where you can change the color of the light and its pattern. For turn signals, there are physical switches on the handlebar similar to cars.
As for locks, Atomi thinks doubling is appropriate. You can secure the Alpha with an in-app lock; something other brands have opted for. But there’s also a physical combination lock with a thin steel cable that wraps around a bike rack embedded in the deck. We asked Atomi why they chose to include a physical lock, since most don’t. A company representative told us this is just to provide a second layer of security so people don’t have to lug extra equipment around.
as seen elsewhere
Safety features aside, the Atomi Alpha looks like a pretty decent urban electric scooter, though there’s nothing inside that we haven’t seen before.
Powering the scooter is a 650W electric motor with a top speed of 30 kilometers per hour (about 18 miles) and a maximum range of 40 kilometers (25 miles). The deck on top of the 9″ puncture resistant tires can support a maximum load of 120 kg (265 lb). An LED display on the handlebar will show your current speed and remaining battery life.Rear Suspension Promises to “Guarantee You a Smooth Ride [on] All terrains,” says Atomi.
Other notable features include three speed modes (Walk, Eco and Sport) and a collapsible pole for easy storage. Again, this is all stuff seen elsewhere. However, if you are someone who likes to ride at night and want better safety, the Alpha is certainly well equipped.
currently Can only be purchased from Atomi’s website in the US (opens in a new tab) Prices start at $649.99. As of this writing, there are only two colors: Zinc White and Pine Green (the black is currently sold out). An Atomi representative told us the company is looking into overseas shipping, but could not give a specific date.
