To increase engagement between creators and users, YouTube will add unique account handles to channels, similar to account handles on social media platforms.
You probably know them better because they’re the “@” sign that appears before the username. When this function is activated (opens in new tab)you’ll be able to mention content creators or other users to “add [a video’s] visibility and [help it reach] new audience. ” YouTube did implement something similar not too long ago. Creators can Shout out to other channels in video title and description (opens in new tab) Or let people mention other users in live chat, but that’s about it.
Handles, on the other hand, will be used in more places, such as YouTube Shorts, channel pages, video descriptions, comments, and even in the channel’s URL. Regarding custom URLs, Google seems to be getting rid of them in favor of handles. One YouTube help page (opens in new tab) Reveal channels can no longer set custom URLs or change them, but they will still be supported when new features are launched.
launch in waves
According to YouTube, Handles will be rolled out in stages. For the rest of October, creators will be notified (via email or YouTube Studio) when they’re able to create their own handles, so they can claim them before anyone else. Channels that already have custom URLs will automatically switch to the new system. This unique URL will be the forward handle.
according to a Different YouTube help pages (opens in new tab), which channel to choose first “depends on a number of factors” such as presence on the platform, number of subscribers, and how active the channel is. Presumably, the largest channel will be the first. Also hope that the handle feature will reduce channel copycats. YouTube wants to make sure you, the viewer, are engaging with the right creators.
Channels will have until November 14th to choose their unique handle, after which YouTube will create one for you, but they’re not set in stone. At any time, you can go to process page (opens in new tab) and change it.
Douyin Competition
Looking at this feature, we can’t help but feel like it’s another attempt to compete with TikTok. The platform has its own version of the handle, so it makes sense that YouTube would eventually copy it.
Plus, YouTube Shorts have been very successful. Alphabet CEO Sunder Pichat claims The new video format gets over 1 billion views per day. So YouTube has been supporting Shorts, New features are added almost every month and allow users to monetize their content.
Compared to Meta’s Instagram Reels, Shorts is arguably a true competitor to TikTok. It will be interesting to see how YouTube continues to build it and Meta’s reaction. Imposing Reels on people is counterproductive, so a different approach may be required.
Speaking of Meta, the company recently hosted Connect 2022, which culminated in the showcase of Project Cambria, now rebranded as the Meta Quest Pro headset.must check out TechRadar’s coverage of the event.
