Sir Vivian Richards
Sir Viv Richards was a major figure during the West Indies cricket team’s golden era (1974-1991). He led the national squad to its greatest success from 1984 until 1991. Sir Viv is third among West Indian batsmen with 8,540 runs in Tests, including 26 hundreds. He scored 6,721 runs in one-day internationals, with an average of 47 and a strike rate of 90.20. The influence that Sir Viv had as one of the game’s greatest players cannot be properly conveyed even by the most impressive statistics.
Brian Lara
There is no doubt that Brian Lara is one of the greatest hitters of all time. Lara first played in a Test match and ODI in 1990. He had a 17-year career as an international cricket player. He captained the West Indies three times: from 1998 to 1999, from 2003 to 2005, and from 2006 till his retirement in 2007. With 11,912 runs and 34 hundreds in international Tests, he is the West Indian player with the most runs ever. He scored 10,348 runs in one-day internationals, setting a new record.
Sir Garfield Sobers
Many mylivecricket fans consider Sir Garry Sobers to be the sport’s best all-around player. The lefty seemed capable of everything, as he was a standout in the field as a shortstop and on the field as a leg spinner, off-spinner, and middle-order batsman. And he was also a terrific medium-pace bowler. He played in 93 Tests and scored 8,032 runs, putting him at #4 all-time among West Indian batters in terms of individual performance. As a young batter of only 21, he set the record for the highest individual score in a Test match with 365 not out in 1958.
Sir Frank Worrell
Sir Frank Worrell, the first black man to lead the international team, is widely considered to be one of the finest cricket captains in the West Indies. In addition, he captained the West Indies from 1961 to 1963 when he finally retired. Sir Frank is generally recognised as one of the “Three Ws,” together with Sir Clyde Walcott and Sir Everton Weekes, for their debuts for the West Indies in 1948 against England.
Everton Weekes
In his day, Sir Everton Weekes was one of the “Big Three” (along with Clyde Walcott and Frank Worrell) of exceptional West Indian batters. His offensive output was strong across the board despite his small stature. Over the course of 10 years, he made 48 Test appearances for the West Indies. Weekes had a batting average of.59 while scoring close to 4000 runs. He had a major impact against India both domestically and abroad. When playing against the team, he had a perfect record, averaging 107 with seven century and four half-centuries. Along with Sir Herbert Sutcliffe, Weekes holds the record for quickest 1000-meter Test run.
Curtly Ambrose
Opening bowler for the West Indies and legend Sir Curtly Ambrose, who stood at a towering 2 metres in height, debuted in Tests in 1988 and One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in 1990. He played in all formats until his retirement in 2000. Sir Curtly established himself as a legendary West Indian bowler thanks to his pinpoint accuracy, which led to countless miscues in the batting order. Ambrose took 405 wickets during the course of 98 Test matches, with an average of 20.99.
Clive Lloyd
Clive Lloyd, captain of the West Indies during their glory years, was a master strategist. Lloyd led the squad from 1975 until his retirement in 1984 after making his debut in both Tests (1966) and One-Day Internationals (1973). Lloyd, who stood at 6 feet 4 inches, was a dangerous middle-order batsman who could smash the bowling attack to bits. Lloyd scored 19 hundreds and 39 half centuries in Test play.
Malcolm Marshall
In the 1980s, the West Indies’ best speed bowler was Malcolm Marshall, who bowled at a blistering pace that surprised opposing hitters. Before retiring from the game in 1992, Marshall earned his One-Day International (ODI) and Test debuts in 1980 and 1991, respectively. He finished with 376 scalps over the course of 81 Tests, including 22 five-wicket hauls and four ten-wicket hauls. In one-day internationals, Marshall has 157 wickets at a 26.96 average.
George Headley
George Headley’s batting prowess helped elevate an underdog West Indies squad both before and after World War II. Since Headley’s time, West Indian cricket has produced other hitters who share his preference for an aggressive batting style. He made his West Indies debut at age 18 and played in 22 Test matches between 1930 and 1954. His 60.83 batting average is the best of any West Indian player.
Courtney Walsh
Courtney Walsh first appeared in a cricket match in 1984 and was an integral part of the West Indies squad until his retirement in 2001. Over the course of his career, Walsh and fellow opening bowler Sir Curtly Ambrose bowled batting lines with brutal effectiveness. In 2000, Walsh became the first Test bowler to reach 500 wickets, four years before the record of 519 wickets was surpassed.
