A trial was carried out at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham over the weekend to see if esports could go hand in hand with traditional sports such as swimming and track and field.

100 players representing 20 different Commonwealth countries compete for medals in three different video games: Rocket League, Dota2 and eFootball.

The trial was widely regarded as a success. Lady Louise Martin, president of the Commonwealth Games Federation, told the BBC: “Going forward, this will be a sport in the Olympics – that’s my personal view.”
