Think Beyerdynamic, and you might think of audiophile-grade in-ear headphones, like the excellent DT 770 Studio/Pro that sound engineers admired, or the equally talented Amiron Wireless. But to this day, true wireless earbuds have not been found in its catalog.
Beyerdynamic isn’t in a hurry, but the long-awaited true wireless earbuds from the long-established audio brand are finally here, and it’s refreshing that they don’t look at all like the best noise-cancelling earbuds on the market. They don’t even resemble Apple’s AirPods Pro.
As you can see, the new earbuds are designed to combine the premium sound quality Beyerdynamic loves with a design philosophy reminiscent of classic guitar picks. Honestly, it’s nice to see something original, unique, and a little bit rockin’ – all designed and developed in Heilbronn, Germany.
In addition to the powerful aesthetics, you also get active noise cancellation, large 10mm drivers (but note that each earphone weighs a relatively hefty 7g), the latest aptX adaptive and AAC codecs, and transparency mode, So you can go from immersive to meaningful conversations with just a tap of your earbuds.
Beyerdynamic doesn’t skimp on accessories either. Buyers can choose from five different silicone earphones designed by Beyerdynamic’s acoustic experts to ensure the best fit, plus three memory foam earphones for physical activity – the Free Byrd features IPX4 splash resistance.
Thanks to Qualcomm’s dual-microphone cVc technology on each headset, the Free Byrd should also have the highest voice intelligibility during calls or meetings.
You’ll also get Google Fast Pair, and gamers will be able to deploy Free Byrd’s low-latency mode, which guarantees perfect synchronization between image and sound.

Arguably the most interesting feature here is Free Byrd’s support for Beyerdynamic’s updated MIY applications. “MOSAYC – Attention to Detail with Mimi Sound Personalization” (yes, the name is long) starts with a two-minute listening test, then adjusts the sounds and settings inside the headphones so they fit the individual user’s hearing profile.
Elsewhere, Beyer calls it a “light guide system,” which helps facilitate different modes of user action (such as Bluetooth pairing) by using LEDs of different colors.
The Beyerdynamic Free Byrd is also impressive when it comes to juice, delivering up to 11 hours of competitive battery life on a single charge — though it doesn’t specify how many charges can be collected from the case. Speaking of charging, the earbuds are ready to store in their compact charging cradle/case, powered via USB-C (which supports Qi wireless charging), and a 10-minute quick charge provides up to 70 minutes of listening pleasure.
Available in black or grey, the Beyerdynamic Free Byrd true wireless earbuds are available from today for $249 (about £207, AU$365), considering Apple’s AirPods 3 retail for $179 / £169 / AU$279 , it’s a little hot, but then again, this is Beyerdynamic – and it’s just Look On those things…
